Savoury Quick Breads

Savoury Quick Breads include a wide range of bakes, most notably loaves, scones, and muffins. But what they all have in common is that instead of yeast, they’re made using raising agents like baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, or self-raising flour which already has them added. And that means quick breads completely live up to their speedy name. There’s no kneading and no proving. Just mix up the ingredients and bake.

Savoury Quick Breads recipes

This makes Savoury Quick Breads perfect for when you need to rustle up something fast, whether that’s a snack to eat on its own or to accompany soups, stews, or salads.

Because they don’t contain yeast, quick breads don’t have the same texture as regular breads. But accept them on their own terms, and I think you’ll enjoy their softer, often more moist texture. I’ve brought together some of my favourite cheesy, Savoury Quick Breads to tempt you. Just tap on the headings or images to go straight to the post and recipe.

CHEESE SODA BREAD

Soda bread, in a sweet or savoury form, is probably the most well-known quick bread. But whether you’ve never made soda bread before, or perhaps you’ve been disappointed with the taste and texture of other recipes, I think you’ll love this incredibly cheesy and light version.

VERY CHEESY CHEESE SCONES

Consistently among my most popular recipes every single week, these might just be the fluffiest, cheesiest, best cheese scones ever! Ready to enjoy in around 30 minutes, warm from the oven, split and spread with butter, they’re hard to beat.

CHEESE & WALNUT LOAF

This savoury loaf is full of cheesy flavour and crunchy walnuts. The soft and moist cake-like crumb is thanks to the addition of eggs for a wonderfully light quick bread.

CHEESE & CHILLI CORNBREAD

I think it’s a shame that cornbread, a versatile type of quick bread popular in regions where corn is a staple, hasn’t caught on in Britain. But I aim to change all that with my easy, fluffy, moist and tasty version with cheese, sweetcorn kernels, tangy pickled chillies as well as chilli flakes. Delicious eaten warm with butter as a snack, great as a side to spicy stews and chillies.

CHEESE & VEGETABLE MUFFINS

Perfect for snacks, lunchboxes, picnics, or to eat alongside soups and salads, these savoury, fluffy muffins are packed with courgette, carrot, red onion, and chives. If you want a crunchy element, there’s optional nuts and seeds too.

ROASTED PEPPER, SALAMI & CHEESE SCONES

I was inspired by the flavours of Italy for this take on the classic cheese scone. They’re studded with roasted red and yellow peppers, nuggets of sun-dried tomato, garlicky salami, and fresh basil.

HAM, OLIVE & CHEESE QUICK BREAD

Inspired by French cake salé or savoury cake it would be fun to cut this one into cubes and serve as the French do: with nibbles and drinks at pre-dinner social gatherings known as l’heure de l’apéro.

CHEDDAR & CREAM CHEESE SCONES WITH GARLIC & HERBS

As well as adding flavour, the garlic and herb cream cheese in these delicious scones helps to make them flaky and tender as well as fluffy.

CHEESE, CHORIZO & CHIVE SCONES

With a generous amount of smoky chorizo as well as cheese and fresh chives, these scones are packed to the gills with flavour. In fact, I loved the combination so much I made it into a quick bread too!

CHEESE & CHORIZO QUICK BREAD

The quick loaf version of the scones above, this has a wonderfully crispy crust. I especially love it as part of a tapas feast or with meats and cheeses.

COURGETTE, CHEESE & BASIL QUICK BREAD

This is another quick bread inspired by French cake salé or savoury cake. I even gave it a touch of southern French flavour with a nod to Provençal Soupe au Pistou: herby, garlicky, and with lots of courgette.

CHEESE & APPLE SCONES

If I’m in a hurry and need a quick snack, I’ll often grab an apple and a piece of cheese. And that inspired these savoury scones with sweet-tart Bramley apple, mature Cheddar and Parmesan.

CHEESE & BACON LOAF

Another easy, cheesy light loaf with very little hands-on time. This one’s studded with tasty morsels of smoky bacon while the crust becomes crisp and with the flavour of toasted cheese.

CHEESE, SMOKY BACON & SPRING ONION SCONES

That winning combination of cheese and smoky bacon again, this time in a fluffy scone made extra savoury with fresh spring onions too.

SAVOURY MEDITERRANEAN QUICK BREAD

A delicious loaf packed with classic Mediterranean flavours: courgette, roasted red pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, garlic, herbs like basil, plus nuts, seeds, feta and Parmesan cheeses.

SAUSAGE, SAGE & ONION CHEESE SCONES

Inspired by the flavours of sausage stuffing, in these rather special savoury scones there’s temptingly browned sausage meat, softly sauteed red onion plus a subtle herbiness.

CHEESE & HAM SCONES WITH WILD GARLIC

Cheese and ham is a classic combination so, of course they work brilliantly in a scone. But here I added a seasonal twist too: wild garlic. If you don’t have wild garlic then add chives instead: Chinese or garlic chives would be great.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this round-up of some of my favourite Savoury Quick Breads. If you try any of the recipes, do let me know how it went by leaving a comment and rating on the recipe post.
