Savoury Biscuits and Crackers

Savoury biscuits and crackers, for cheese or other tasty toppings, are surprisingly easy to make at home. And with so many shop-bought packets containing environmentally disastrous palm oil, being able to rustle up your own biscuits and crackers is a real boon.

Perfect with a snack or part of a cheeseboard, or for dipping into with hummus, in this post I share recipes for my favourite savoury biscuits and crackers.

Thin and crispy, oaty and crumbly, or seedy and gluten-free, you’re sure to find something to love!

Most of them will keep at least 2 weeks in an airtight container. Some even longer.

EASY HOMEMADE CRACKERS

This is one of my earliest, simplest, and most popular homemade cracker recipes. Made with just flour, salt, olive oil and water, you can use them as a base for adding different flavourings, vary the types of flour etc. to create an infinite variety.

ROSEMARY CRACKERS

Deliciously herby, crisp and moreish, this variation on my original Easy Homemade Crackers are perfect as a snack, to eat with cheeses, pâté, dips, or alongside soups.

SOURDOUGH CRACKERS

These are the sourdough version of my basic Easy Homemade Crackers, and are great for using up excess sourdough starter. But I think they’re so good it’s worth making extra starter just so you can bake these!

EASY SEED CRACKERS

Grain-free, gluten-free, made with nothing but seeds, water and your chosen seasonings, Easy Seed Crackers are light, crispy, and delicious. The not-so-secret ingredient that holds these super-simple crackers together is chia seeds.

CHEESEJACKS

Rather like a mini, crispy savoury flapjack, Cheesejacks are a great accompaniment to cheeseboards or eat as a snack. Incredibly easy and super-tasty.

HOMEMADE RYE CRACKERS

Inspired by thin and crunchy Nordic knäckebröd, I like to each these flavoursome crackers as an open sandwich piled with tasty toppings. But they work just as well as a regular cracker with cheese.

BEETROOT CRACKERS WITH NIGELLA SEEDS

My Beetroot Crackers with Nigella Seeds not only look good but taste wonderful too. Beetroot brings an earthy sweetness while nigella seeds add a contrasting mild bitterness that becomes quite addictive.

RYE, SPELT & SESAME CRACKERS

Wholesome and moreish, Rye, Spelt & Sesame Crackers have become one of my favourites. Wholemeal rye and wholemeal spelt, both ancient grains, add a certain nuttiness along with sesame seeds.

DIGESTIVE BISCUITS

My Homemade Digestive Biscuits are another of my most popular recipes. Unlike the palm oil-laden big brands, these are semi-sweet so are just as good with cheese as dunked in a mug of tea.

HOMEMADE CHEESE CRACKERS

Simplicity itself to make, but tasting incredible, these delicious, crispy cheese flavoured crackers can be ready in little more than half an hour.

SCOTTISH OATCAKES

If you want a completely savoury, oaty biscuit then classic Scottish Oatcakes fit the bill perfectly. So easy and satisfying to make, I think they’re head and shoulders above shop bought ones.

PARMESAN & CHEDDAR BISCUITS

These intensely cheesy, buttery light and melting Parmesan & Cheddar Biscuits might just be the best cheese biscuits you’ve ever tasted! So moreish, they disappear fast. Especially good alongside a glass of mulled wine or port.

CHEESY SCOTTISH OATCAKES

Here’s another cheesy biscuit, this time based on my classic Scottish Oatcakes. Wickedly good, with plenty of tangy of cheese taking Cheesy Scottish Oatcakes to another level.

SESAME CRACKERS

Thin and crispy, with lots of earthy sesame flavour, I created Sesame Crackers to scoop up dips like hummus and baba ghanoush. But they’re just as good with cheese or peanut butter. So tasty, you can even snack on them without a topping.

WALNUT & PUMPKIN SEED SCOTTISH OATCAKES

Walnut & Pumpkin Seed Oatcakes are another variation on my classic Scottish Oatcakes. In fact, I think they may be even better than the original. Nuts and seeds marry perfectly with the nutritious oats, while optional walnut oil intensifies the nutty flavour.

CARROT, TURMERIC & BLACK PEPPER CRACKERS

With a mildly spicy warmth and a little sweetness from the colourful root vegetable, these are great with all sorts of dips and spreads.

SEEDED SCOTTISH OATCAKES

Another variation on the classic Scottish oatcake, a generous amount of seeds gives them a wonderful, toasted flavour plus little nuggets of extra crunchiness.

FLAKY CHEESE CRACKERS

Easy, melt-in-the-mouth flaky crackers with different toppings are the perfect cheesy nibble with drinks.

I hope you enjoyed my recipe round-up for savoury biscuits and crackers. If you’ve made any of them do leave a comment here or on the original posts.

  • Greetings from New Zealand, thank you so much for your sesame seed cracker recipe. We have a cracker here in New Zealand called “Sesameal”, and as we have long standing issues with cow dairy and grains, these have been off limits for years. So finding your recipe and adapting flours to tapioca starch, buckwheat flour and psyllium husk made these a winner. in our house. Onto our second batch in 3 days! As with most gluten free recipes, more liquid was needed, but they baked very quickly. We are having a late winter health shake up and shunning our “healthier” baking and fruit just now for a bit of a nutritional reset. Perfect time for Sesame Crackers!
We lived in Scotlnd for 5 yers, so next on the list is a Faux Scottish Oatcake! Am thinking quinoa, buckwheat and maybe a bit of ground sunflower meal.
Thank you for your lovely recipe writing, and for inspiring us to cracker heights!

    • Thank you for your lovely comments! It’s great to hear you’ve been able to adapt my recipe to gluten-free and I’m sure your detailed feedback will be helpful to others. Thanks so much for getting in touch!
