Oven Temperature Conversion

Oven temperature conversion tips plus an easy to read conversion table. Temperatures in Celsius for regular and fan ovens plus Fahrenheit and gas marks.

Recipes on Moorlands Eater are tested using an electric fan oven with temperatures in degrees Celsius. In my detailed recipe cards, I do give the temperature equivalent for non-fan ovens (although Fahrenheit only appears in later posts following a reader request). But I thought it would be useful to include an oven temperature conversion table on my website anyway. I hope you’ll find it helpful wherever you get your recipe inspiration.

Before we get to the oven temperature conversion table, it’s worth noting a few points.
  • Temperature equivalents are approximate due to rounding up or down.
  • Don’t mix Celsius and Fahrenheit in a recipe but stick to one or the other.
  • Fan temperatures are usually given as 20° Celsius lower than non-Fan temperatures. This is because of an assumption that the fan function can’t be switched off. However, if you can (and want to) switch the fan off, then use the non-Fan temperature shown in recipes.
  • It’s widely accepted that oven thermostats can be inaccurate. This means that your oven may be running cooler or hotter than the dial indicates. In that case, you may need to adjust the temperature up or down a little for any given recipe. If you want to be really accurate you could get a stand-alone oven thermometer, although personally I’ve never felt the need.
  • Because an oven is designed to cook a certain amount of food, you shouldn’t overfill it. Completely filling three shelves for example and your baking may be uneven despite a correct temperature.
